Hard part of hatching

is losing them when they were so close to hatching!

The four eggs we had in the incubator died.

We put 16 more eggs in the incubator and hatch day is October 19th.

Out of this hatch only two made it. Both pipped at the wrong end and had to be helped after 24 hours of trying to hatch on their own.

Silkie Chick Update

The silkie chicks are growing and now have names. We picked names that are gender neutral but we think that Twitch is a boy, Charlie is a girl, Aval is a girl, and Max is a boy.

Chick 1 – Buff with vaulted skull. We call him Twitch because he has an odd twitch to his head. We think it was because of a peck to the head by his “siblings” about four days after we brought them home. He is the one that is starting to get red in the comb. He is banded blue.

Chick 2 – Buff with Vaulted Skull. Charlie is banded green. It looks like I am squeezing his neck but I promise I am not.

Chick 3 – Buff chick with vaulted skull. Aval is banded pink Chick 4 – White chick no vaulted skull. Max is not banded.

We are having babies

well not us specifically but Mr. Rooster and the girls! We put in four eggs from our flock and four eggs from the neighbor. So far every egg is progressing and growing a chick!

We candled yesterday and this is what a fertilized egg that is starting to grow a chick looks like.

We also have two double yolk ones. Usually double yolk (twins) eggs either stop developing on or around day 10 or do not survive the hatch.
